Are There Carbon Footprints All Over Your House?
But have you ever considered the other items around your house that are made from petroleum-based oil? You may be surprised to learn that these seemingly innocuous products contribute to your carbon footprint:
Cosmetics: Petrolatum (aka petroleum jelly) is a common ingredient in many cosmetics and personal care products, as are mineral oil, paraffin, and propylene glycol. Lip balm, lip gloss, and the plastics used in personal care products are some of the worst offenders. Check the ingredient labels before you buy and look for products that use plant-based oils or beeswax in place of petroleum.
Art Supplies: Crayons, paints, and printing inks are all petroleum based. Look for beeswax or soy crayons and non-toxic, water-based paints and art supplies.
Toys: The plastics used to make many of your children’s favorite toys are all petroleum based. The worst kinds are the “flexible” plastics that also contain phthalates, a particularly noxious group of chemicals that I love to rant about. Opt for wood (particularly FSC certified) or second hand toys to reduce your carbon footprint.
Nookie Supplies:
Yeah, I know. Most parents either can’t remember what nookie is or they’re so happy to get it that they can’t be bothered trying trying to make it eco-friendly. But the fact remains that most lubricants and um, toys, used in this arena are petroleum based. Look for veggie-based lubes (they even make organic varieties!) and toys that are at least durable (and less likely to get tossed) if they have to be made from plastic.

We’ve been working on deplasticizing our life, but after making a list we can see we have a long way to go. Our biggest BADBADBAD non-eco items we seem to be overflowing with is– TOYS.
Our list shows every object we can find in our house (non-building materials) that contains plastic or a petro source. No makeup here, no plastic tupperware. Electronics and computer related items are large offenders. Toys the biggest. Then you have the little things we don’t notice: office binders, hairbrushes, etc. Not sure about clothing.
