A Rainbow of Green Art Supplies

Can an orange crayon be green? It can if it’s made from natural ingredients like soy or beeswax instead of petroleum. The same goes for that red marker or rainbow watercolor paints.

In addition to their contribution to global warming, traditional art supplies also contain a slew of dubious chemicals and solvents. Non-toxic art supplies are not only better for the planet, they’re also better for your family’s health as they don’t off-gas noxious chemicals. And while they certainly aren’t edible, you won’t have to panic quite as much if you see your toddler gnawing on a beeswax crayon as you would if she were chewing on a petroleum-based variety.

The good news is that there are green options available for just about any color of your budding Picasso’s palette. Here’s how to find eco-friendly art supplies:

Seal the Deal
: Look for the ACMI seal (Art and Creative Materials Institute) on everything from paints to crayons to glue to ensure that the product is non-toxic for both your child and the planet.

Recycle It: Your child’s prized artwork will look just as good on recycled paper as it would on a clean sheet. Look for 100% post-consumer waste paper at the store or raid your recycle bin for homemade scraps.

DIY It: Can’t find eco-friendly art supplies in your area? Make your own instead! Click here to learn how to make your own recycled paper and be sure to check out The Green Parent: A Kid-Friendly Guide to Earth-Friendly Living for an awesome organic play dough recipe.

I think soy wax is awesome, but stealing beeswax from bees (and killing many of them in the process) doesn’t really seem in line with the idea of not harming the planet. Plant-based solutions are nearly almost always the greenest.

Bees are not typically killed in the process of collecting beeswax. (If you know a beekeeper, have a conversation with them. If you don’t, you should meet one - they’re really fun and after the conversation is over, you’ll be more well-informed.) Most beeswax is collected from the cappings that are removed when harvesting honey. The balance of the comb is returned to the bees. They then fill it w/honey again and re-cap the cells. Have fun!

Soy wax is NOT awesome. The production of soy wax is energy-intensive, and residues of extraction solvents and bleaching chemicals remain in the final product.

I just wanted to share news about a non-toxic, recyclable, refillable whiteboard marker called AusPen. If anyone else out there is as allergic to the toxic fumes of a whiteboard marker as I am, I am sure they will appreciate the information. You can view all of the information at http://www.ecosmartworld.com

Hi there. Thanks for posting. It’s always great to look for ways to use the environment with as little negative impact as possible. Even if the alternatives you mentioned may still have some bad effects on the environment, I think there’d be no harm in trying them if that can help even just a tiny bit. If there are some guaranteed safe products you know, please post them.
