How to Safely Dispose of Prescription Medications
Pontiac High School’s Paul Ritter and Eric Bohm from Pontiac Township High School initiated a collaborative effort that brings together students, pharmacies, and local officials to research a safer way to dispose of prescription medications. Their project, P2D2, aims to educate folks about the dangers of improper medication disposal and the alternative that’s better for both people and the planet.
Instead of tossing or flushing their drugs, people in the town of Pontiac, Ill. can now bring their unused medications back to the pharmacy for safe disposal. The drugs are incinerated at an energy-producing plant, so they won’t find their way into our soil or our water supply. Contact Ritter and Bohm if you’d like to start a similar program in your area.

Just to clarify, you should be able to bring medication (prescription and over-the-counter) to any pharmacy to have it disposed of, no matter where you live.
That’s true SkylarKD; however, most pharmacies will not dispose of the medications in an eco-friendly manner.
In the program mentioned in this post, the medications are incinerated so that they will not take up space in a landfill or wind up in the town’s water or soil. Most pharmacies dispose of medications by encasing them in plastic and sending them to a hazardous waste facility.
When my mother-in-law died, I took her leftover medicine to a ministry that collects and ships supplies overseas to the poor and to medical clinics, etc. It’s called Equipping the Saints in Weyers Cave, Virginia. They were extremely grateful for my donation, plus gave me a receipt for taxes!
