Get A "Green" Lawn
Every year, Americans use 10,000 gallons of water, 70 million pounds of pesticides and over $5 billion dollars worth of fertilizers in order to get those “green” lawns to which we are so obviously addicted. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, “Homeowners use up to 10 times more chemical pesticides per acre on their lawns than farmers use on their crops.” These chemicals leach into our soil and water, affecting birds, insects, and mammals in the area. Not to mention the chemical residue they leave in the yard that gets tracked all over the house by kids’ shoes and pet’s paws. If you’re headed out to do some yard work this weekend, here’s how to get a lawn that is lush, beautiful, and truly green.
- Water Less: More plants die from over-watering than from under-watering, so think twice before you reach for that hose. Only water your lawn when it needs it (it doesn’t spring back when you step on it).
- Mow Less: Longer grass grows deeper roots that make it stronger, healthier, and less susceptible to weed and pest infiltration. Mow your lawn less and you will not only save yourself time and sweat, you will also save the planet by reducing the need for water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
- Give Up The Junk: Replace your toxic chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers with “greener” solutions.
- Xeriscape: Xeriscaping, or choosing plants that are suited to the fuel moisture and soil conditions of your yard, can help you significantly reduce the amount of chemicals (and work!) required to make your yard look great. Plants that are native to your area will survive and even thrive in your particular climate without extra effort on your part. Check with your local nursery for suggestions.

OK–I love the idea of mowing less. Now we have a really good reason!
the best kids shoes are those that are made of natural leather but they are a bit more expensive compared to synthetics “
most brands of kids shoes are using synthetic leather which is sometimes hard for a kid’s feet .*:

I can agree with letting the lawn go longer between mowings. It reduces my need for watering, and I only have to collect clippings every two weeks!
