Homemade Organic Play Dough

In my research for The Green Parent: A Kid-Friendly Guide to Earth-Friendly Living, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lori Helman, mom of 4, enterpreneur, homeschool teacher, environmental activist, and founder of Momma’s Baby.

While we spoke on the phone, this incredible mom’s four young children were playing silently in the same room with some organic playdough that Lori had mixed up for the occasion. She was generous enough to share with us that magic recipe!

Ingredients

1 cup organic flour

½ cup sea salt

2 Tbs. cream of tartar

1 cup filtered water

1 Tbs. vegetable oil

Mix flour, salt and cream of tartar in a saucepan. Combine water and oil in a small bowl. Stir into flour mixture gradually. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until very thick, stirring constantly. Remove and allow to cool for a few minutes. Knead until smooth. Store in an airtight container.

Thanks, Lori!

Dude that’s not organic play dough, that’s just how you make play dough. Who ever told you that’s organic has never made play dough as a kid, or doesn’t have kids, or is just to damned lazy to make their own play dough.

Thanks Ashley, glad you like it!

And thanks for your comment Anon. This play dough is organic because of the organic ingredients used…organic flour, oils, etc. But you’re right, parents have been using recipes similar to this one for decades!

If you add colors, be sure to use colors made from plant and vegetable extracts. The chemical food dyes (even the ones on the baking aisle) are scary!

  5. Natassia says:

You can even make the playdough smell nice by adding a couple drops of essential oils, just check which types and amounts are best for children, especially those who like to put things in their mouths.

I’ve used a different (easier) method that works just as well. Boil the water and add it to the flour/salt/tartar mixture. Knead, etc. You don’t really need to “cook” it all together. With a toddler running around, I like that I don’t have to stand “stirring constantly” even for 5 minutes.
