Green Business Cards
Last week I attended a blogging conference where I caught up on all of the latest ideas and gadgets for blogging and teamed up with a bunch of great green bloggers. One of the most important things I learned at the conference about my own green business is that…my business cards need a makeover. My old cards are focused solely on my first book and give little mention to my website, or the other two books that I have coming out next year (more to come on that, for sure!)
I usually opt for the e-version of a business card whenever possible, passing along my contact info via email or twitter, but during conferences and green events where I meet hundreds of people over the course of a day, it’s pretty handy to have a physical card detailing my contact info.
So with my next event (the DC Green Festival) fast approaching, I’m on a search for a green printing company that can make some new cards for my business without trashing the planet in the process. One company I like thus far is PSPrint. They recycle all of their paper waste, use soy based inks that emit fewer toxic VOCs (volatile organic compounds) than petroleum inks and are therefore easier to recycle, they offer 100% recycled paper for business cards and most of their other products (like holiday cards and brochures), and they have printing facilities on both East and West coasts so I don’t have to worry about shipping my eco-savvy business cards across the country to my location.

Companies such as PSPrint and Bizcard are sending the proper message to all businesses within the Print Industry. Small companies influencing one another and adopting green practices will help to produce a quantifiable impact on the environment.
One thing that we have done is to print on generic card that anyone in the company can use. There is a space to write in the employee’s name. Some other things we do:
We are paperless when possible and use only 100% post-consumer recycled paper products.
We recycle computer equipment when possible. When equipment cannot be recycled, responsible disposal practices are observed.

We did everything by email – Consolidated was great to work with, and the cards, on recycled card stock with soy-based inks, are beautiful. The company is woman-owned, union, super eco-conscious. you should also check out http://www.caryprinting.com. they are the nation’s premier green printer and are triple green certified. i have used them for numerous projects and they are incredible with great customer service too. saving the planet is easy with cary printing.

They’re also a part of the Green Exchange (www.greenexchange.com), a community of green businesses, and another good resource when you’re looking for green vendors.
Another option is a service like TextID–a recently launched novel way to help people communicate with customers, colleagues and friends—WITHOUT paper. TextID allows users to purchase unique text “domains”, such as their names or businesses that allows them to pass along contact information and messages quickly and conveniently. They can give out their ID, lawn care or Angie for example, and the recipient texts that name to 555411. In just a few moments, they will receive a text back to their phones with contact information and the message the TextID member has chosen, which can also include a pdf file or brochure.
Obviously the new service has a wide range of applications, from personal to commercial. Whether for realtors looking to get pricing and home information into a potential buyer’s hand while they are out looking for a home, a hip teacher providing up-to-date assignment and test information, a restaurant passing on weekly specials, a club promoter pushing the weekend band, or someone just looking to make the dating scene a bit easier, Text ID works great for a variety of users.
