Waste-Free Wednesday

Waste-Free Wednesday

Morning all, and welcome to Waste-Free Wednesdays…the toilet seat edition.  I’ll explain.  Last week, the toilet seat in the bathroom broke.  Not the toilet (whew!)…just the seat.  Actually, it was the plastic bracket between the seat and the lid that broke, making them both useless.  So I replaced the seat/lid combo, and now have two large pieces of plastic that are destined for the trash heap unless I can come up with a better path for them.

So I’ve given the parts a good cleaning and now I’m wondering what to do with them.  I know I can take the seat parts to the thrift store or list them on Freecycle (one person’s junk is another person’s treasure.)  But I’m curious if there is any way that I can reuse these items at home.  I’m not really looking for “craft” ideas…I don’t want to make a toilet seat picture frame or toilet lid diorama or anything along those lines.  But has anyone come up with a useful purpose for a toilet seat that can no longer be used on a toilet?
In the meantime, here are some of the waste-free links that caught my eye this week:

Many funny pictures come to mind but the one that sticks is to hang it from a tree and use it as a target for throwing practice with a football. Good luck with that recycling project.

Thanks for the link to my mail post, Jenn.

I’ve got no clue what to do with the toilet seat, but I’m sure my boys could think of something to do with it in their fort. I just don’t want to know what!

  3. Consider starting a yardshare or group garden in your neighborhood – Maybe you have no space for a garden, or a compost pile but that old guy down the block needs banana peels and coffee grounds for his garden. Get a group going at hyperlocavore.

  4. I tried and tried to come up with a good one for this, but you stumped me. You should have offered a prize for the most creative idea! Here in the South you just toss it in the yard… it’s called yard art!

Waste Free Wednesdays-what a great idea! I love the idea of reducing and not just buying more and more.

I did also want to let you know I tagged you as one of my current favorite sites. Look at the link to learn more. Have a great one!

Hey :) I found your post through Twitter this evening and what great timing. This is the first day of our zero waste WEEK! Residents in our county are being encouraged to reduce their waste this week and it’s a subject that is close to our hearts.
Good luck with the toilet seat stuff, personally I’d put them on Freecycle; I’m just not very creative when it comes to reuse!
Would love to set up a reciprocal link with you :)

I don’t know, what I would do with this seat, I think, I would ask my children, they always have a lot of good and funny ideas. Sometimes they did really useful things just from waste.
