Green Parenting on a Budget

counting-money

Feeling the financial pinch of the recession? You’re not the only one. And for many folks, that means a lot of their green choices are falling by the wayside as they seek out money saving options. Over the past few years, the explosion in the green marketplace meant that there were a lot of ways to buy green options for our favorite products. And while it certainly helps to support businesses that are making eco-savvy products, that is not the only or best way to go green.

In fact, the essence of going green is to buy less stuff. And in this recession, that’s something we’re all prone to do anyhow. Here are some other ways to go green without a lot of green:

  • Make your own green cleaners
  • Turn out the lights
  • Turn down the heat
  • Buy gently used goods
  • Drive less
  • Walk more
  • Eat less meat
  • Start your own garden
  • Make your own beauty products

All of these ideas are not only gentle on the planet, they are also easy on your wallet.  Do you have any more money-saving green ideas?  Let’s hear it!

Check out this great book on saving money and the planet
at the same time. It’s “The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget.” The author, Josh Dorfman, is definitely on the cutting edge of the green movement. In this great book, he shares some insights for going green without breaking the bank (and without expending tons of effort, too!). Even people who already know a lot about green living with find new ideas and affordable suggestions.

  5. To keep our home more comfortable, we use old, flattened cardboard boxes, used bubble wrap or one of those Mylar emergency blankets on windows that get too much sun in the summer. It keeps the heat out quite nicely. The Mylar is nice if you don’t have bubble wrap or cardboard boxes on hand that can be used. It’s really cheap – sometimes as low as $1 for an emergency blanket you can cut or fold to fit your window.

Organic Meal Sharing helps. Get your friends and family on board to split the cost of meals. Prepare a week’s worth of meals together then divide between participants. It saves time and money, make an agreement to purchase the highest quality ingredients.

    Simple guidelines are here: http://www.sagemcgreen.com/shareorganicmeals.html

This builds smaller and stronger communities for a better lifestyle.

One thing I really admire about my parents is that they grow their own vegetables. Not only are they organic, with no pesticides, but they’re fresh, and they’re cheaper than buying them. Buying them is more expensive, and it’ll probably take gas to do so. I’ll make sure to do that when I grow up. :)

This is good! I wish green products were priced better as this would make it more accessible to the average person like it is in Europe and other countries. When that happens being Green will be the standard.

This article is great, since most green living blogs ignore the B word (budget ;) ), but there are actually many ways for parents to get all the green gear they want without paying for it. I created 29Diapers.com and the book Ecofrugal Baby: How To Save 70% Off Baby’s First Year for parents who want to go green on a budget WITHOUT being minimalists.

“Love,” said the tiger, and with its rough red tongue it licked the blood from Cinnamon’s palm, and licked her soft brown face.

Abosultely love it! The more and more I look for stuff like this, the more I find that I would not have known about it if I hadn’t found it by accident. This site is one such example. And with all of the internet advertisement spam out there, it is nice to find one that actually has something useful on it for a change, and not someone who is worried about selling a bunch of junk. Now, I was really looking for , but came up with this instead. As for the subject itself, not sure if I can input any real insight that the author did not already provide, but I can tell you that I definitely like the way it reads. The first sentence of the post is right on the mark. Either way, I will definitely add it to my list of feeds so I can stay updated as much as possible. Hopefully you keep it updated enough so it doesn’t stay buried at the bototm of the pile.

  18. Hwa Lattimer says:

It was bright morning when the child and the tiger walked out of the room together. Cymbals crashed, and bright birds sang, and Cinnamon and the tiger walked towards the Rani and the Rajah, who sat at one end of the throne room, being fanned with palm fronds by elderly retainers. The Rani’s aunt sat in a corner of the room, drinking tea disapprovingly.
