Are you ready to take the ENERGY STAR Pledge?

Team ENERGY STAR launched this week.  Have you joined the team?

Team ENERGY STAR is a very cool initiative conceived by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  It was brought to my attention by Diane MacEachern of Big Green Purse, so I knew it was worth it’s weight in green.  I joined up immediately and here’s why you should too…

You’ve probably heard of the ENERGY STAR program, which was developed to help families make better choices about saving energy.  Products at the store that carry the ENERGY STAR label use less energy to operate than their counterparts.

If you’re in the market for a new toaster, purchase one with the ENERGY STAR label and you will know that it will use less energy than other toasters.  Easy, peasy.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, ENERGY STAR has nearly 20,000 partners committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes, buildings and businesses, and the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 product categories.  In 2011 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 41 million cars — all while saving $23 billion on their utility bills.

Now Team ENERGY STAR has launched as a means to engage and educate American youth and their families about saving energy in the home. Team ENERGY STAR empowers kids to help protect the climate through easy-to-implement, money-saving actions and provides them an outlet for sharing their passion for preserving our environment. And, with Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax as the engaging theme for Team ENERGY STAR, kids can learn and have fun at the same time.

Kids can join Team ENERGY STAR where they can work hand-in-hand with the LORAX to save energy!  At the energystar.gov/team website, they will get easy-to-download educational and interactive materials, such as a comprehensive Action Kit, the ENERGY STAR Home Check-Up, a Lorax activity booklet and a Lorax mustache-making kit.

Team ENERGY STAR is part of a multi-year EPA campaign,  Millions of people are getting involved, joining their neighbors in this grassroots movement to help protect the climate by saving energy. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Visit energystar.gov/changetheworld and see how people and organizations all over are making a difference.
  • Attend an event in your area to learn ways to take control of your energy bills while contributing to a cleaner environment.
  • Take the ENERGY STAR Pledge at energystar.gov/pledge and join 2.8 million other Americans who are taking action to protect the climate.

If every American household took part in the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Pledge, we would: save more than 126 billion KWh/yr of electricity, save $18 billion in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from 20 million cars.

I joined Team ENERGY STAR.  Will you?

This post is part of a Team ENERGY STAR carnival.  Check out Big Green Purse on June 12 to hear from tons of bloggers who support energy efficiency and Team ENERGY STAR.
