My meter reading this morning: 89161
Can you guess what this month’s eco-challenge is? That’s right, I’m cranking down the energy use in my home. I’ve done this before. But this month, I’m going to do it smarter.
Like most green bloggers, I’ve written tons of articles of the years on saving energy. Heck, I have a whole site category devoted to it. And when I was writing The Green Parent, I did borrow an watt meter (similar to the one in the photo) from a friend to determine which items in my house used the most energy. But like most busy moms, I rarely have time to put all of my good intel in to practice. Sure, I make sure all of the lights are off before I leave the house and I crank the heat down in the winter and keep the A.C. to a minimum in the summer, but I’ve never really made an all out effort to reduce energy in my home.
This month, I’m gonna do it. And I have an incentive. The energy bill. Our local energy provider was bought out by another about six months ago and since then the energy bills for everyone in my community have been creeping up. We can complain all we want , but the fact remains that the best way to lower this bill is simply to use less energy.
To keep things honest, and interesting, I’m posting my energy bills from this time period for the last two years:
2009 (60 day bill from Feb 19-April 21): 2568 KWH, $235.13
2010 (60 day bill from Feb 19-April 20): 3063 KWH, $290.50
It crept up, didn’t it? Of course, just to make my life complicated, the new energy company that we were switched to bills on a monthly, 30 day cycle. So to compare, I’ll divide the bills from the last two years in half as such:
2009: 1284 KWH, $117.57
2010: 1531.5 KWH, $145.25
So these are the numbers to beat. And I’m going to use every trick in the book to do it. See the meter reading at the top of this post? I’m going to post the day’s reading as often as I can every day in March so you can keep track of how I’m doing. And more than that, I’m going to let YOU know along the way, what’s working and watt (get it?) isn’t!
